THURSDAY

Even though SoHo was a fucking brat, he didn’t deserve what happened to him.

SoHo Minter got his unusual given name from the fact that his mother was a dedicated follower of fashion, obsessed with the lives of celebrities. When she had gotten pregnant the first thing she had done was chart the trends in baby names, and it just so happened that her favourite couple -the diva star of a reality TV show about the dysfunctional scions of a real estate tycoon, and her sexy-dangerous former gang member turned fashion-designer husband- had had fraternal twins which they’d named after neighbourhoods in New York. So, with Yonkers and Queens already taken, Alana Minter had looked up the Big Apple on-line and selected the coolest sounding area that hadn’t already been taken by any of her friends, who were also jumping on the current fad.

So SoHo got his name.

And everything he ever asked for.

Which had turned him into a fucking brat.

That morning, SoHo had decided that he needed to take some personal time for himself, so he told his mum that he wouldn’t be going in to school, and probably not tomorrow either.

“Today, SoHo has to look after SoHo,” he explained. “SoHo needs some time to get his head straight. Too much stress for SoHo.”

He was eight years old.

His mum, of course, fully understood his choice and respected it, and called the school to explain the situation.

The school offered no argument. The head master’s secretary had been instructed to just let anything Ms Minter said or did go under the radar.

The psycho-bitch and her child-emperor offspring just weren’t worth it.

There had been a visit once, in which Alana Minter had explained to the administrator of her son’s education that she fully believed in the maxim of, “Spare the rod and spoil the child.”

And she had put the emphasis in the wrong places, entirely inverting the actual meaning of the Biblical quote.

Alana made her son his favourite breakfast to cheer him up... but seeing as though SoHo got whatever he asked for breakfast anyway, this was moot. His favourite was microwave pizza with fish fingers laid on top, then another pizza turned on top of that to make a sort of sandwich. For pudding he had a box of strawberry fondant fancies that Alana had individually removed the paper wrappers from and placed back in the box, and a can of grape flavour energy drink decanted into three different sippy cups to wash it down. She also left two packets of jammy dodgers and a bag of fizzy cola bottles in case he needed a snack.

Alana had work, but she knew her clever, creative, astonishing son was very mature for his age, so she had no qualms about leaving him home alone until she could pop back at lunchtime. He had his phone and his tablet, and could contact her through social media if he needed to.

She covered his face in kisses as she served his breakfast to him in bed, preparing to
